Gram sci:
Gram sci defined hegemony as the way in which those in power maintain power. Dominant ideologies are considered hegemonic.
for example:
- USA in the hegemonic culture worldwide
or
- police that are trustworthy and will support or help you
hoddies - automatically associated with crime (fear)
travellers - seen as thiefs (they dont present themself in the best way)
doctors - trustworthy (Harold Ship man killed 200+ broke the trust)
identifying ideology:
ideologies are promoted in many different ways think of a way that women are portrayed in films, on television and in magazines. Magazines are a very good way of showing an ideal lifestyle. This 'ideal' is directly linked to the dominant ideas in society consider:
- are they explict/implict?
- how does the text employ dominant ideologies?
- what ideological assumptions are made in the text?
- are these idelogies cultured, institional or both?
- do the idelogies reflect the type of text? (i.e adverts are driven by ideologies)
