Looking at different horrors/thrillers

Today in lesson we was told to decide group of three or four and decide on a horror or thriller we would like to anaylse using camera angles, mise-en-scene and represenation. In my group  (harriet nicholls, harriet long, rebecca roydhouse) we decided to look at the thriller 'Jennifer's Body' we got some basic information of the film:

The film was produced in 2009, By the directer Karyn Kusama, the writer was Diablo Cody. Starring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried and Adam Brody.

A newly possessed cheerleader turns into a killer who specializes in offing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?
Nerdy reserved bookworm Needy and arrogant, conceited cheerleader Jennifer are best friends, though they share little in common. They share even less in common when Jennifer mysteriously gains an appetite for human blood after a disastrous fire at a local bar. As Needy's male classmates are steadily killed off in gruesome attacks, the young girl must uncover the truth behind her friend's transformation and find a way to stop the bloodthirsty rampage before it reaches her own boyfriend Chip.

Looking at specific films and analysing the sounds heard.

Today in lesson we looked at Pirates of the Caribbean and watched the first 5 minutes of the film, we had to listen to every sound we heard and list it, as a class we feed back and came up with:
- wind howling
- creaking
- water pushing against the ship
- girl singing sweetly/very quietly - singing about pirates
- horn/flute
- destruction of the ship
- panpipes
- fire crackling from the burning ship
- the music became intense when the umbrella became visible shortly followed by the boy floating on the river raft
- clock ticking
- snapping of the wood

from this we could analyse that the wind howling could symbolise the loneliness of the sea, the creaking from the ship could determine the destruction that is foreshadowing (the unstableness) the water pushing against the ship could resemble the hardness and pain the water can cause.the little girl singing sweetly contrasts with the wind howling and the water smashing against the ship. The panpipes in the background could symbolise what continent/sea they are travelling over/to showing culture. The clock ticking when the boy arrives at the boat could symbolise that the amount of time they have/running out. and the snapping of the wood represents the fire and what destruction it is going to cause.

we then looked at sound and how most audiences take sound for granted as often you do not take into consideration what the noises in the background could symbolise as everything is there for a reason. It is very important to establish context and atmopshere.

before i would never look at a film and anaylse why producers would do specific things now i look at a film or even an advert and pick up on things straight away and therefore looking at camera angles, mise-en-scene, and sounds this has adapted my vision and hearing and enabled me to look at them in a new light and grasp a better understanding.

diegetic/non-diegetic:
sounds tend to make the media text more natural and creates the intented emotion.

examples of diegetic and non-diegetic:
diegetic - sound of someone mopping a floor matching what is shown on the screen. (someone mopping)
non-diegetic - narrators voice over or footsteps approaching

contrapuntel sound is opposed to or conflict with the image; parrell sounds match the image.

we had to think about whether music in different films is reassuring for example a couple making up or if it is unsetteling for example walking through a haunted house is unsettling.

Techincal codes:

techincal shots are how the sequences are filmed;

- you have an establishing shot
- the transisiton between shots
- the angle of the shot (low angles make subjects seem larger and more opposing)

key terms:
  • dissolve - when one screen image fades in another.
  • fade - when the screen graudually disppears.
  • transition - when moving from one scene to another
  • wipe - when one screen image appears to wipe away another
Symbolic codes:

- objects, body language, settings, clothing, colour, sound-track use symbolic codes.

icongraphy - a prop used to portray or person or personality for example a gun - danger - police or dectective.

Written codes:

- just as important as pictures and music the lettering can convey meaning

Essay on four different war orientated pictures.

In our lesson we was asked to write an essay analysing four different war orientated scenes:
  • scene from iwo jima war
  • scene from raising of the flag in ground zero
  • memorial shot of the iwo jima war
  • Lego version of the scene from iwo jima war
Compare/Contrast the ideologies of these four pictures using hegemony, semiotics, shot types and representation.
The first picture is the flag rising at Iwo Jima. The representation of the raising of the flag could symbolise that America will fight through and the determination and defiance will over rule. It could also be a sign of respect for the soldiers who have fought for their country and died in battle and to those who have fought of their country and been more than brave. The Flag is positioned in the sunlight and therefore could suggest that by raising the flag could symbolise a new start. The flag is being put in the middle of a bunch of rumble this could imply that it doesn’t matter where it is because it’s what really counts that matters and America will get through this because as a country that’s what they do. The angle used in the Iwo Jima shot is long shot at eye level this is used as a way of showing a human view observing the scene. The flag could be used as a way of showing the way the flag is pointing is the way “home”.
Whereas in the second picture is the raising of the flag at ground zero after the America attack (known as 9/11). The representation of the flag here could represent the trust America need to regain as America will pull through and America will go on and not be defeated and gain Americas trust with determination. The raising of the flag could symbolise a sign of respect of the 9/11 suffers and shows that America is still proud and to let the family members and loved ones of the victims that the country does care. The way the flag is positioned is towards the sky this could represent that the victims are going to heaven as they were killed in vain as more towards the top of the picture it become lighter, with heaven we assume white and therefore the idea of the victims reaching heaven is portrayed through this. The angle shot used is long shot at eye level as this is seen as a human view as it is a view from victim’s prospectus. But the flag haven’t just been raised for the victims but for the services offering there service to rescue many. The flag has been raised for all the heroes that either died helping save their country or survived and living as a “hero” The flag could of also been raised as a remembrance of the day America was attacked and victims died in vain and scared many families forever. The men raising the flag are looking towards the flag this could resemble the respect they have towards the victims and the respect they have gained from America as placing there life’s on the line to benefit others.
Therefore in the third picture of the memorial of the iwo jima war the memorial could resemble the respect from the country, family and loved ones of those who died in battle. The war was between America and Japan and the memorial features the American flag and therefore the audience of the memorial is towards the America soldiers. The representation of the flag here is pointing towards then north and therefore could represent home. The flag is being placed by many soldiers and therefore could represent that teamwork was used throughout and embraced and teamwork is the base of everything resembling that America always has a helping hand. Like the scene from the iwo jima war the flag is placed within the rumble and therefore suggests that the battle was a bloody one and ruined a lot of agriculture, land and family lives. So therefore placing the flag within the rubble suggest that the flag is for anyone. The shot is a low angle looking up towards the memorial this could resemble that people look up to and respect the men that died in vain. The added height of the object may make it inspire fear and insecurity in the viewer as it is from a viewer’s perspective.
Finally in the last picture it is a picture of Iwo Jima in Lego form. The use of Lego could be to educate young children to want to learn about history but in a fun, childish educational way. The use of Lego could also be poking fun by using plastic characters. The use of four soldiers could also resemble teamwork and the determination to place the flag in the rumble/soil. To present there pride and patriotic country. Each star on the flag represents each state of America but for example here it could resemble every single victim of the war. The flag here as well as all the other photos could resemble the freedom America has gained whereas in the 9/11 picture the freedom could represent the freedom of pain from the victims as the war heroes died to produce freedom for the country whereas the 9/11 victims has died in vain because of terrorist attacks on America. The shot type here is long shot at eye level this is used as a way of showing a human view observing the scene for example here would be a child. The use of the Lego would more likely o interest a child in wanting to learn about the war compared to just a picture.
Throughout all the war pictures the main use of the flag is used out of respect and pride. Showing the families and loved ones that America is proud of what they have achieved whereas in the 9/11 shot showing families that they do care and what has happened is unforgivable.

More notes on Terminator 2

Today in class we looked at the action/science-fiction thriller "Terminator 2" again and by ourselfs we were asked to anaylse camera shots, angels and anything else we thought could mean or link with something else.

Dream/reality - at family home/ranch:
closeup view could resemble the personal approch to the character and light reflecting behind john which could symbolise the importance for example a angel. The canted angle used is the perspectus of john looking at the termitator. the use of this reflects the father figure the terminator is portrayed as. when sarah wears the glasses this takes away the personal view of her as you are often able to tell alot from somone's eyes as you can look into someones eyes and its a guide to your soul. The red lighting used is a use of foreshadowing on what events are going to happen and represenation of the heat.

Final Scene:
side view of the termitor reflects the personal view as the shot is close up and therefore can see personal features. The use of the two men (terminator and son john) are there to reflect the needity of sarah and trust. The low angle used is used to represent the treat and vunrability or sarah and john and the high angle of the man is used as a threat and therefore the directer is playing with the expectations using camera angles. The extreme closeup of sarah symbolises her pain. On the mans face is a red shadow this could symbolise the evilness in side him and the white shadow could resemble the innocence. The high shot could resemble the weakness of sarah. the use of the colour red could resemble desturction as we know this is going to occur.

Ideology

Today in lesson we learnt about "Ideology"

Ideology: refers to a system of belief that is constructed and presented by a media text.

We came up with the idea that:

When we look at the America flag we think it represents:
- a capitalist country
- patriotic
- determination
- proudness/pride
- each star representing a nation
- liberation
- takeway foods - high in fat
- freedom
- big cities/skylines
- obesity
- empire state building
- statue of liberty

and also when we look at the Chinese flag what we think it represents:
- big populaton
- Chinese food
- traditional clothing
- industry
- communist country
- industry
- great wall of china
- poor/under class
- jackie chan
- hong kong
- sport orientated - talented for example: Olympics.
- strange beliefs
- one one child allowance - government stop paying "benefits"
- ancient civilisation
- small stars on flag - working class, poor workers.

Gram sci:

Gram sci defined hegemony as the way in which those in power maintain power. Dominant ideologies are considered hegemonic.
for example:
- USA in the hegemonic culture worldwide
or
- police that are trustworthy and will support or help you

hoddies - automatically associated with crime (fear)
travellers - seen as thiefs (they dont present themself in the best way)
doctors - trustworthy (Harold Ship man killed 200+ broke the trust)

identifying ideology:

ideologies are promoted in many different ways think of a way that women are portrayed in films, on television and in magazines. Magazines are a very good way of showing an ideal lifestyle. This 'ideal' is directly linked to the dominant ideas in society consider:
- are they explict/implict?
- how does the text employ dominant ideologies?
- what ideological assumptions are made in the text?
- are these idelogies cultured, institional or both?
- do the idelogies reflect the type of text? (i.e adverts are driven by ideologies)

Looking At Terminator 2

Brief Understanding of Terminator 2: Nearly 10 years have passed since Sarah Connor was targeted for termination by a cyborg from the future. Now her son, John, the future leader of the resistance, is the target for a newer, more deadly terminator. Once again, the resistance has managed to send a protector back to attempt to save John and his mother Sarah.

Today in class we looked at the action/science-fiction thriller "Terminator 2" and by ourselves we were asked to analyse camera shots, angels and anything else we thought could mean or link with something else.

Interview: closeup of 'sarah' reflects the desecration in her face of her trying to convince herself and prove herself to them that she has changed and she has improved. This suggests the vulnerability of the character. The use of the canted angle suggests the imbalance and instability of 'sarah'. The clothes she has been forced to wear is a long, white gown which is normally associated with the old and frail and therefore suggest that where she is "mental institute" they associate the patients as a vegetable.

The Escape: the use of the high shot between john and the "father figure" could reflect the idea that he looks up to him as father (which he doesn't have) The use of black and white is used throughout which could reflect the contrast between right and wrong. The use of the low angle used for the carer us used to convey intimidation and the mocking tone of the career licking her face, which could resemble how helpless 'sarah' is as she is tied down. The dark shadow across 'sarah's face only allowing some features to be shown could resemble the suspense of the character, but also the different sides to the person for example black reflecting dark and evil and the non shadow reflecting the innocence. The use of the mirror reflection reflects the tense atmosphere and the uneasiness. All the people working at the institute wear white basic clothing with white clothing we associate doctors and dentists etc, and therefore should be trustworthy whereas in the film the contrast between the lack of trustworthiness and punishment. The use of black and white throughout resembles cold colours which resembles the fear and isolation 'sarah' is experiencing. The contrast between the clothing 'sarah' is wearing between the dress and the the sudden change into trousers and a vest suggest the juxtaposition between her personality (boyish) and what is expected (she is a girl) The low angle shot reflects the idea of the struggle for the career as reaching for the gun. The light is positioned as if the lighting is showing the way to freedom. The high angle shot between 'sarah' and the 'man' reflects the trust between them as she was previously frightened of him as before he was the bad guy.

Looking At Target Audiences Of Films.

Today in lesson we was looking at a different variety of films and analysing of which target audience applied to what film. Some of the films we looked at included: horrible bosses, bad teacher and super 8. We came to the conclusion that "Horrible Bosses" was aimed at the male audience as the domination of the characters was male. The Boss is a female and therefore the contrast between what you would associate a boss as male is actually female as the way the boss behaves. There are only two women characters in the film and therefore suggests a conflict between feminism and sexism. The way women are conveyed in the film could be poking fun the wrong way, as it may offend feminists. (as women are not seen to behave in the specific way) As there are only two women in the film, One of the women are just referred to as "Fat" and therefore suggests that the film lacks respect of women.

We also looked at different social classes and what type of media they read or watch. as a class we came to the conclusion that if you a wealthy you are more likely to read for example "The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire etc. as these are the higher market and more expensive products. Wheres the below working class are more likely to read: The sun, Reveal etc. And the difference between what defines a higher or low market product and what the company offers for the money.

More Camera Angles

For homework we was asked to take one or two pictures or even locate them from the Internet/magazine. identify and locate the camera angle and comment on the effect/mood created and think about the way in which the subject is portrayed to the audience (connotations of the camera shots and angles)

The camera shot used in this image is "Establishing Shot" and at "Eye-Level" the camera is positioned as though it is a human actually observing a scene and will never be more than six feet from the ground. The colours situated in the picture are all nature related and as you work your way down the picture the vibrancy of the green brightens and reflects the idea of nature evolving and how freshness is blooming. The mood created from this image is freshness and beauty of the landscape and could reflect the idea of Hollywood and the new beginning. The image is portrayed to the audience as a fulfilling dream.

The camera shot used in this image is "Extra long shot" and "eye level" the use of this is that the people do not dominate the image and therefore the shadows (from dark to light) influence the idea of walking into happiness and a new life which reflects the idea of "marriage" and a new start. The couple are holding hands and therefore symbolises there love and affection for each other and controls the whole image. The image fades into darkness and therefore could suggest that the light will lead the way which reinforces the idea of the couple walking towards the light.

Shot Angles

We also started to look at different shot angles including:

LOW-
These increase height (useful for short actors like Tom Cruise) and give a sense of speed ed motion. Low angles help give a sense of confusion to a viewer, of powerlessness within the action of a scene. The background of a low angle shot will tend to be just sky or ceiling, the lack of detail about the setting adding to the disorientation of the viewer. The added height of the object may make it inspire fear and insecurity in the viewer, who is psychologically dominated by the figure on the screen.

EYE-LEVEL -
A fairly neutral shot; the camera is positioned as though it is a human actually observing a scene, so that eg actors' heads are on a level with the focus. The camera will be placed approximately five to six feet from the ground.

HIGH-

Not so extreme as a bird's eye view. The camera is elevated above the action using a crane to give a general overview. High angles make the object photographed seem smaller, and less significant (or scary). The object or character often gets swallowed up by their setting - they become part of a wider picture.

WORMS EYE-

CANTED-
Sometimes the camera is tilted (ie is not placed horizontal to floor level), to suggest imbalance, transition and instability (very popular in horror movies). This technique is used to suggest POINT-OF-View shots (ie when the camera becomes the 'eyes' of one particular character, seeing what they see — a hand held camera is often used for this.

BIRDS EYE-
This shows a scene from directly overhead, a very unnatural and strange angle. Familiar objects viewed from this angle might seem totally unrecognisable at first (umbrellas in a crowd, dancers' legs). This shot does, however, put the audience in a godlike position, looking down on the action. People can be made to look insignificant, ant-like, part of a wider scheme of things. Hitchcock (and his admirers, like Brian de Palma) is fond of this style of shot.

CAMERA MOVEMENT:

1. Pan
A movement which scans a scene horizontally. The camera is placed on a tripod, which operates as a stationary axis point as the camera is turned, often to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame.

2. Tilts
A movement which scans a scene vertically, otherwise similar to a pan.

3 .Dolly Shots
Sometimes called TRUCKING or TRACKING shots. The camera is placed on a moving vehicle and moves alongside the action, generally following a moving figure or object. Complicated dolly shots will involve a track being laid on set for the camera to follow, hence the name. The camera might be mounted on a car, a plane, or even a shopping trolley (good method for independent film-makers looking to save a few dollars). A dolly shot may be a good way of portraying movement, the journey of a character for instance, or for moving from a long shot to a close-up, gradually focusing the audience on a particular object or character.

4. Hand Held Shots
when a person holds the camera in the hand while shooting

5. Crane Shots
Basically, dolly-shots-in-the-air. A crane (or jib), is a large, heavy piece of equipment, but is a useful way of moving a camera - it can move up, down, left, right, swooping in on action or moving diagonally out of it. The camera operator and camera are counter-balanced by a heavy weight, and trust their safety to a skilled crane/jib operator.

6. Zoom
a single shot which moves towards a particular subject.

7. Reverse Zoom
a single shot which moves away from a particular subject.

8. Steadicam
mechanism for steadying a hand-held camera, consisting of a shock-absorbing arm to which the camera is attached and a harness worn by the camera operator.

9. Tracking Shots
a shot in which the camera is pushed horizontally along the ground on a dolly.

Camera Angles

Today in lesson we started to look at the different types of camera angles there are and how they are portrayed: we was placed into groups and were able to create our own camera angles.

AS- AERIAL SHOT

A camera shot films from a helicopter, balloon, kite or a high building (higher than a crane)

ES- ESTABLISHING SHOT

A long shot, often the first in a sequence, which establishes the positions of elements relative to each other and identifies the setting.

ECU- EXTREME CLOSEUP
The extreme closeup is used to reveal very small details in the scene. it might be used to reveal horror in a subject. (extreme close up of the subjects mouth as he/she screams) it might also be used in a mystery to show some detail that the detective picks up on or to show some small clue.

CU- CLOSEUP

The close up shot is used to reveal detail. if you are shooting just the head and shoulders of a subject this is a close up.

MS- MEDIUM SHOT

The medium shot is from just below the waist to above the head.

MLS- MEDIUM LONG SHOT

A shot in which a largish object (eg, the human figure from lower leg) fits easily within the frame. Which this shot, you can still see expression on the person's face, while getting more information from what is going on around the person.

LS- LONG SHOT
A shot in which a large object (eg, a complete human being figure) fits easily within the frame.

ELS- EXTRA LONG SHOT
Also known as the establish shot, this gives the viewer some perspective as to where the subject is. This is important if the subject is moving to new locations or times. It lets the viewer know where the video is taking place.

TWO SHOT-
Two-shots are composed when two people are in the scene and their interaction is important. A two-scene is a good way to introduce a conversation. From the introduction you might cut to an over the shoulder shot of one person talking or a close-up of the other person reacting to what is being said.

OS- OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT

The over the shoulder shot reveals one subject as seen from over the shoulder of another subject. it stimulates a view of the subject as seen from the second person's eyes. This shot is often used in conversations between two people where the directer wants to focus on the person speaking. Usually these shots are head shots (close ups of the speaker).

POV- POINT OF VIEW
A shot which is understood to be seen from the point of view of a character within the scene.

Semiotics

In our second lesson we looked at four different styles of "Women and Home" magazines and we had to decide what was summer, spring, autumn and winter editions and what special techniques are used to establish which determine what theme of the time of year it fitted into. For the winter edition we was able to spot the red and gold colour scheme, these colours are rich and vibrant and are associated with the theme of Christmas and the festive season (build-up to Christmas or after) the model on the front is dawn french as we are aware dawn french is a comedian and as a class we came up with the idea that by using a comedian on the front this could resemble the type of year winter is as it is family oriented. and with your family you have fun and have lots of laughs! For the autumn edition we was able to establish the use of the rich brown and orange tones portrayed on the font colour. The use of the brown, orange and navy blue could resemble the trees and the natural fact of trees undertaking the change of leaves and the idea of coming to the end of the year. We were able to see the spring edition was bright and femine using the colour scheme of white and pink this could resemble the kick-start to the offspring and the regrowth of the summer plants showing new life. By using the colour scheme of pale blue, white and yellow this enabled us to analyse that it must be the summer edition reflecting the water and the sun and how you would associate it with summer.

We also learnt what semiotic analysis was to represent the level which examines the meaning of a text, what the relationship between the element in the a text, for example camera angles,mise-en-scene,font,colour,sound etc. and how exactly these have been directly linked.

The symbolic level looks at the hidden meaning in the terms of ideology and institution and how it is important to look at:
- the context of conscription
- the cultural history of institution for example: a 1950's western may be viewed differently by George W.Bush (a native American) and the feminist Germain Grear.
- identifying the connotation and target audience.

At the second part of the lesson we presented our advert analysis to the class and shared ideas by doing this, this increased our imaginative ideas and our interruption's of what connotations we could spot. By sharing ideas this helped us adapt our own ideas even more as a different perspective gave us new and a more adapted final analysis.

Analysising a Advert

The advert i have choosen to anaylse by using Mise-en-scene is Lynx-Excite. I have choosen to use this advert as when watching the advert i was able to look at the structure and adapt my own ideas from the camera perspective not the audience perspective. Mise-en-scene meaning: the name given for the arrangement of scenery to represent the place where a play or movie is enacted.

LOCATION AND SETTING:
The advert is set in a small relgious town in croatia and therefore there are many religious connotations for example the angels falling from heaven. (as you assocaite angels with heaven) throught the advert there are a various different scenes for example in the main square, the middle of the road and outside a ladies house. This could resemble the idea that the product is so addictive that you are able to smell it from anywhere.

COSTUMES AND MAKEUP:
There is no age group specificly because throught all the scenes there are different ages and no specific gender. (male and female, child, adult and elder) there is so social classes dominating throughout the advert as you have a mixture, for example: the little child at the begging dressed in dull and ripped clothing walking through a alley way contrasting with the rich and smart business man sitting have a business lunch, he is dressed smartly and therefore gains more respect. The different colour clothing could resemble the different personalitys for example the lady on the street has a dull expression on her face compared to the main in the suit with a happy expression.

PROPS:
The angels used throughout the advert can be seen as props as it could be seen that the angels were sent from heaven to find the distinctive but addictive smell. as they are one of the main focuses throughout as they are constantly falling from the sky. The scenes are focused in a normal village life for example all the villagers doing there day to day life for example the taxi driver and then is soonly astonished by the beauty of the angel and is speechless. All the angels are women this could resemble the target audience: males. it could back up the idea that by using this product you are attracting "angel" like women. For example one of the angels falls infront of a car this unlying message could portray the idea of effecting day to day life and making a statement.

LIGHTING AND COLOUR:
When the young boy enters at the beginning the lighting is dark and intimidate this could resemble the sombre mood of the boy and reflect on social classes. the light begins to brighten up as the angels begin to fall. when the angels fall from the sky the light is focused on them and they are englighted this could reflect the idea of new, fresh and vibrent light. when you smell the fragence you then become englighted by the product and are determind to find the person. The angels are then smashing there halos on the floor this could reflect on the idea they have found the person and now what to become immortal to be with him as it is so addictive.

First lesson of AS media studies

Today in our first lesson of AS media studies we looked at the outline of the course and what would be expected of us throughout our AS year (September 2011 - January 2012 onwards) We concentrated on the two parts of the media studies course (G321: FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO IN MEDIA & G322: KEY MEDIA CONCEPTS (TV DRAMA)) and looking at specifically what we was going to do for example: the studies of the video games, the main company's we are going to be focusing on is Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. We then concentrated on the main key elements we are going to be studying including camera angles and techniques,mise-en-scene,colour connotations, sound and lighting, ideology, audience, media language and detailed analysis but not a description. we looked at the difference between Denotation and Connotation. Denotation meaning an exploit or direct message meaning rather than a suggestion and connotation meaning An idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
We then looked at Flora Cuisine advert featuring Veron Kay
We was able to analysis the advert using denotation and connotation;

LOCATION AND SETTING:
The "Mum" is the main focus within the advert as she is always portrayed within the scene or is her view prospectus this could resemble that a mother is always in control. The scene is set in the kitchen this is normally referred to as the heart of the home (religious connotations) (referring to religious reasons for eating for example Italian nature to want to feed family and guests) and a woman's home. The idea of vernon sitting down reflects the idea of the "Mum" being the main focus as she is standing up this could refere to the idea of the importance of a mother and how it is in her nature to want to feed her son even though he has his own kids and has now grown up.

COSTUMES AND MAKEUP:
The "Mum" has been put in a casual jumper and jeans, the jumper looks soft, cosy and comforting and could resemble her personality as a mum. the colour of the jumper is pink and therefore suggests the mum is femine and subtle. Whereas Veron has been put in a blue denim shirt and jeans which is always soft and comfortable. The juxtaposition between the mums pink jumper and vernons blue shirt can be viewed as the idea of gender representation, and how colour's can be classed as femine or masculine.

PROPS:
Flora Cuisine Butter cooking in the pan is the main prop throughout the scenes as this is the product they are trying to promote. the kitchen that is portrayed in the scenes are full of pans, plants and organic/healthy food this could represent that it is a family kitchen and home cooking is regularly done. the idea of having plants and organic growth scattered around the kitchen could be promoting healthy eating as the product itself its 45% less than ordinary butter. with the idea of a lot of pots and pans it would represent the idea that the family is very family oriented and the natural surroundings suggest the fruit and grown contrasting with mother and son.

LIGHTING AND COLOUR:
The sun is constantly coming through the window in the left hand corner of the scene which is where the mum is always situated this could resemble the idea because she is the consumer of the product she is "the star of the show" because she is the one using it she is englightened by its "powers" the cross referencing from the colours of the peppers and other healthy food portrayed though out the advert promotes the idea of healthy eating by using the bright and attractive fruit/vegetables.

We was also given this advert to analysis using denotation and connotation-

the font used for "ETERNITY" is sans sari ff which is the font used for more of a informal advert, letter etc. the name of the perfume is written in capital letters across the top section of the advert this is the immediate part of the advert you first look at as it is a main attraction, the letters are also thing and could reflect the idea of subtle and femine aiming at the specific target audience - women. The woman carrying the child in the advert is portrayed as a mother figure. she is smiling and is happy and could resemble that there is no age range for this perfume as two separate age ranges are considered within the advert. The background location is in the countryside this reflects the idea of nature - flowers, peaceful, femine and free this could also resemble the idea of escapism. The advert is in black and white this could reflect the idea of memories and how they can come and go. The relationship between the mother and daughter is reinforcing the relationship and how close mother and daughters can be. The idea of hertiage is combined with the advert as it shows to generations this could come from the idea of passing down the smell which also backs up the idea of there is no age group or social class with reflects the idea of the informal font.

We all shared our ideas from the adverts and combined the ideas to come to a combined analysis of the advert.
